LEWISBURG, Pa. – Lehigh suffered its first road and Patriot League loss of the season on Sunday as Bucknell scored in the second minute and never looked back in dealing the Mountain Hawks a 3-1 setback at Emmitt Field. The Bison raced to a 3-0 second half lead before senior Liz Carlos scored in the 80th minute to account for Lehigh’s goal. The Mountain Hawks saw their five game unbeaten streak come to an end as they fall to 7-3-3 overall and 1-1-1 in the league.
“We just were not very sharp as a group today,” explained Lehigh head coach Manny Oudin. “We did not bring the same energy that we did Friday night at Colgate. We struggled in terms of focus and execution.”
Bucknell went in front just two minutes into the contest after capitalizing on a mistake in the back for Lehigh. Junior goalkeeper Lauren Mains mishit a clearance attempt and Chelsea McGorry pounced on the loose ball and put it into the open net. Lehigh out-shot Bucknell 12-7 in the first half but trailed 1-0 at halftime.
The Bison extended their lead in the 51st minute when Kelliann Doherty netted her second goal of the season off a feed from Christa Matlack. The lead grew to 3-0 in the 77th minute on a goal by Molly Linhart with assists from McGorry and Doherty.
Carlos finally put Lehigh on the scoreboard when her shot from 15 yards out grazed the bottom of the crossbar and went in for her third goal of the season.
Lehigh finished the day with a 20-18 advantage in shots and a 3-2 edge in corner kicks. Carlos and sophomore Genna Pepe led Lehigh with four shots apiece, while Matlack fired a game-high five shots for the Bison.
“You have to give credit to Bucknell,” said Oudin. “They were very opportunistic with the chances they were given.”
Bucknell improves to 7-6-1 overall and 2-1-0 within the league.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Wednesday night when they return home to face the Princeton Tigers. Game time is set for 7 p.m. from the Ulrich Sports Complex and the contest will be broadcast online at Lehighsports.com.
