POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – For the third straight game a Lehigh contest remained scoreless into the final minutes, but an 87th minute goal from sophomore Glynn Fitzer propelled the Mountain Hawks to a 1-0 win over Marist Sunday afternoon at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field. Fitzer’s tally was the only goal in a game controlled by the defenses of both sides combined for just 14 shots and only five shots on goal on the afternoon.
The victory improves Lehigh’s record to 3-4-1 on the season, while Marist falls to 2-5.
“The biggest thing for us today was that we responded from the disappointment of Friday night with a good effort this afternoon,” said Lehigh head coach Manny Oudin. “I’m pleased with our ability to bounce back, and we got some good play out of your young players.”
Sunday’s game marked the fourth consecutive Lehigh contest that was scoreless after 45 minutes. The Red Foxes had a chance to take the lead three minutes into the second half, but sophomore Lauren Mains saved a penalty kick off the foot of Lauren Tillotson. Mains finished with four saves on the afternoon with all four coming in the second half.
The game appeared to be destined for overtime, before Fitzer delivered her first goal of the season, eluding a defender in the box and shooting high to the near post to beat Jamie Balzarini and give Lehigh its third victory of the season.
Each team registered seven shots on the afternoon, while Lehigh held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Mountain Hawks will return to the pitch on Friday when they return home to open a three match home stand against Fairleigh Dickinson. Game time is set for 7 p.m. from the Ulrich Sports Complex.
