BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh returned home for the first time in three weeks, but a strong defensive effort went for naught as Joni DeMoor scored six minutes into overtime as Monmouth downed the Mountain Hawks 1-0 Friday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The Mountain Hawks battled hard against the defending Northeast Conference champions, but the visiting Hawks capitalized on their best scoring opportunity of the night to improve to 5-1 overall while dropping Lehigh to 2-4-1.
“We can’t have a lapse that late in the game and allow a free service,” said Lehigh head coach Manny Oudin. “That laps negates the work rate we had put in, which was pretty strong throughout the course of the night. We need to learn that concentration and focus will win you some games.”
Monmouth created the game winner shortly after a throw-in in the Lehigh end as BrieAnne Nomejko’s service from 25 yards away found DeMoor who headed the ball down and past sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Mains for her fourth goal of the season.
Both teams played solid defensively to keep the game scoreless through regulation. Mains finished with five saves, while Monmouth’s Lia Fierro made three stops to earn the clean sheet.
The visiting Hawks held a 13-8 edge in shots and a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks. Junior Liz Carlos fired a team high three shots for the Mountain Hawks, while sophomore Glynn Fitzer put a pair of shots on goal. Andrea Lopez had three shots for Monmouth including a first half attempt that glanced off the crossbar.
The Mountain Hawks will be back in action on Sunday when they travel to Marist. Game time is set for 1 p.m. from Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
