ITHACA, N.Y. – Lehigh snapped its two game losing streak and picked up its second victory of the season as the Mountain Hawks blanked Cornell 1-0 Sunday evening at Charles F. Berman Field. The Mountain Hawks received a big boost from their bench as freshman Hannah Cochran and sophomore Danielle Fritz came in as substitutes and combined to produce the game’s only goal. Lehigh improves to 2-3-1 with the victory, while the Big Red falls to 1-3 on the season.
The two teams combined for 38 shots, with each side credited with 19. The Big Red pushed to get on the scoreboard early in the second half, but sophomore Lauren Mains was up to the task as she made nine saves, including two big saves on Cornell’s Brook Chang and two other key stops on Lena Russomagno and Christina Law.
In the 70th minute, Lehigh’s bench finally was able to produce the game’s first goal as Cochran found Fritz, who finished from eight yards out for her first goal of the season. From there, the Mountain Hawk defense clamped down, limiting the Big Red to just two shots in the final 20 minutes, both of which sailed wide.
Fritz’s goal is the second of her career and both proved to be game-winners in 1-0 Lehigh victories.
“It was a good effort to bounce back after a disappointing second half Friday night,” said Lehigh head coach Manny Oudin. “We still had some trouble putting the ball away, but we got a great goal from Dani (Fritz) and were able to grind out a win on the road.”
Mains’ nine saves matched her career high set Friday at Saint Joseph’s. Offensively, junior Liz Carlos paced the Mountain Hawks with six shots, including five on goal. Sophomore Glynn Fitzer and freshman Jana Basubas were also active, firing four shots apiece.
Kelly Murphy made eight saves in the game for Cornell.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action Friday when they return home to face Monmouth. Game time is set for 7 p.m. from the Ulrich Sports Complex and all the action can be seen at Lehighsports.com with streaming powered by Yahoo! Sports College Broadcast.
