ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Lehigh wrapped up competition at the opening session of the 78th NCAA wrestling championships, Thursday afternoon at Scottrade Center. The Mountain Hawks had a tough opening round, dropping all five of their matches in the tournament’s first session. The five losses mean that all Lehigh wrestlers have been eliminated from the championship bracket, but all five will have a chance to wrestle back beginning Thursday evening.

The session began with Lehigh’s two bouts in the pigtail round. Junior Trevor Chinn met No. 5 seed Josh Churella of Michigan at 149 and the defending national runner-up scored a takedown in each period en route to an 8-2 victory. Chinn will now face Bryce Saddoris of Navy in the consolation pigtail round tonight.

Sophomore Manuel Schubert fought valiantly in his match with A.J. Kissel at 184, but couldn’t complete a third period comeback in a 6-4 loss. Kissel scored a takedown in the first period and added nearly two minutes of riding time. Schubert bounced back in the third period, scoring twice against the tired Boilermaker, but a shot in the final seconds did not result in a takedown that would have forced sudden victory. Schubert will face Jacob Devlin of Air Force in the consolation pigtail round.

At 133, sophomore Seth Ciasulli fell victim to a pair of first period takedowns and never recovered as he fell 11-5 to Kenny Jordan of Nebraska. Ciasulli will face Dan Mitcheff of Kent State in the consolations Thursday evening.

EIWA Champion Dave Nakasone also suffered a narrow loss, bowing out against No. 10 seed Michael Chandler of Missouri. Chandler scored the first takedown and added a healthy riding time advantage, which offset Nakasone’s lone takedown, which came in the third period. Nakasone will meet Matt Moley of Bloomsburg in the consolations at 157.

In Lehigh’s final bout of the afternoon session, freshman Alex Caruso suffered a loss by major decision to Stanford’s Luke Feist at 174. Feist caught Caruso in a scramble for a takedown and three-point near-fall to build a 5-0 lead and cruised to a 9-0 major, avenging a 5-3 loss to Caruso in a dual meet on January 4. Caruso will meet Josh Patterson of Binghamton in the consolations.

The 2008 NCAA Wrestling Championships continue Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. from Scottrade Center. The session will feature the championship round of 16 as well as pigtail and first round consolations.
