BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Junior Matt Cohen was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced on Monday.  Cohen scored his first collegiate touchdown in Lehigh’s 31-15 victory over Bucknell this past weekend, as the Allentown native returned a fumble 38 yards to pay dirt.  The starting linebacker also picked off his team-leading third pass and totaled five tackles on the afternoon, including one-half sack.  This is Cohen’s first career Player of the Week honor.

Cohen scooped up a fumble on Bucknell’s first possession Saturday and raced 38 yards for his first touchdown at Lehigh.  The accounting major then made another momentum changing play when he picked off Bison quarterback C.J. Hopson in the third quarter and returned the ball 20 yards down the opponent’s 11-yard line.  Three plays later, Lehigh scored to take a comfortable 19-point lead.

For the season Cohen has registered 48 total tackles, including a team and Patriot League leading 15.5-for-loss.  Cohen also leads the Mountain Hawks and Patriot League in sacks with six, and his three picks lead the Brown and White.  Cohen has made five or more tackles in seven games this season, topping out with an eight tackle performance at Harvard.

Cohen and the rest of the Mountain Hawks return to action on Saturday when they travel to Easton to take on archrival Lafayette in the 144th edition of college football’s most played rivalry.  Game time is set for 1:00 from Fisher Stadium.
