HAMILTON, N.Y. – Colgate scored a pair of second half goals to break a 1-1 halftime tie as the Raiders downed Lehigh 3-1 in the Patriot League opener for both teams Saturday at Tyler’s Field. It was a tale of two halves for the Mountain Hawks, who looked strong in the opening 35 minutes, but were unable to continue the momentum into the second half. With the loss, Lehigh falls to 3-7 overall and 0-1 in the league, while Colgate improves to 7-4, 1-0 in league games.
Senior Kalynn Davies gave Lehigh an early lead with a strike off a penalty corner, her second goal of the season. Kara Zweizig and Lindsey Smith assisted on the goal. The Raiders also capitalized on a corner opportunity as Maddie Watrobski scored on a feed from Mika-Ella Tang.
The Raiders took the lead in the 51st minute as Katelyn Nerbonne netted her second goal of the season. Laura Denenga added an insurance tally for Colgate, scoring her third goal of the season with just over three minutes to play.
Lehigh was out shot by a 21-7 margin on the afternoon, including a 12-3 disadvantage in the second half. Colgate also enjoyed a commanding 15-4 edge in penalty corners.
“We started strong and looked really good in the first half,” said Lehigh head coach Julie Mazer. “Their goal before the end of the first half really broke our momentum, and we simply didn’t play with enough energy in the second half.”
Sophomore Jessica Miller made eight saves in the goal cage for the Mountain Hawks, while her counterpart, Sarah Pederson made two for Colgate.
The Mountain Hawks will return to the turf on Sunday when they travel to Cornell. Game time is set for noon from Ithaca, N.Y.
