EASTON, Pa. – In its final game of the 2008 season, Lehigh fell to No. 19 American 6-0 Friday night in a game that was played at Lafayette’s Rappolt Field. Six different players found the back of the cage for the Eagles, who proved why they are the Patriot League regular season champions, as American completed a sixth straight undefeated Patriot League regular season, improving to 10-6, 5-0 in the league. The Mountain Hawks’ season comes to an end at 3-14, 0-5.
“You have to give American credit as they came out and gave a great effort,” said Lehigh head coach Julie Mazer. “They took advantage of every opportunity they had. We had some moments of strong play, but we were never able to put it all together.”
American jumped on Lehigh early, with three goals in the game’s first nine minutes. Irene Schickhardt opened the scoring 3:10 into the game, with Anne Van Erp and Kirstin Gebhart adding scores to make it 3-0 Eagles early on. The damage could have been worse, but sophomore Lilia Stefaniwsky made four saves, and classmate Taryn Hartzell added three first half defensive saves to keep it a 3-0 game after 35 minutes.
Savannah Graybill put the Eagles up by four at the 41:48 mark, but Lehigh’s defense held American at bay for the next 20 minutes, before Natalie Ellenberger and Allison Baron scored in the final ten minutes. Sophomore Jessica Miller played the second half in goal, and was tested early and often, but responded with 12 saves, including a penalty stroke stop of Anne-Meike DeWiljes midway through the second half.
The Eagles finished with a 28-4 advantage in shots and an 11-1 edge in penalty corners. Junior Lindsey Smith had three of Lehigh’s four shots, with sophomore Katey Fardelmann recording the other.
The loss marked the final game for Lehigh seniors Kalynn Davies, Jenn Cochran and Kara Zweizig.
