BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The first match of a crucial weekend for Lehigh volleyball did not go as planned for the Mountain Hawks, as they fell to the Colgate Raiders in three sets at Leeman-Turner Arena.

With the loss, Lehigh moves to 8-14 on the season and 3-5 in the Patriot League. The Raiders, meanwhile, improve to 9-12 and 4-4 in the Patriot League to pull ahead of the Mountain Hawks in the league standings.

“We’re disappointed,” Lehigh head coach Jenny Maurer said. “Not to take anything away from Colgate, but we’re better than that. We just didn’t play well.”

The Mountain Hawks dug themselves a hole in the opening set, making 11 errors in a 25-16 loss to the Raiders. Lehigh managed just 10 kills in the frame for a -.022 hitting percentage in the initial set.

The second set was more of the same for the Brown and White, as Colgate increased its lead in the match with a 25-16 win yet again. Lehigh committed eight more errors in the second, while Colgate notched 12 kills and made just four errors.

After the intermission, the Mountain Hawks still couldn’t get things going and fell in the third and final set by a score of 25-15 to seal the match.

“We just told them that there’s a difference between wanting it and doing it,” Maurer said. “We have to go out and focus on executing the little things.”

Junior captain Brittany Thurston led the Mountain Hawks with eight kills on the match, while freshman Emma Melendez le the team with 15 digs. Overall the Brown an White struggled in most statistical categories, making 26 errors for a .000 hitting percentage on the match.

Lehigh has a chance to make amends for this loss quickly, as the Mountain Hawks take on Bucknell on Saturday afternoon at Leeman-Turner Arena. Coming into the weekend, Bucknell sat in sole possession of third place while Lehigh and Colgate were tied for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Patriot League standings.

“We have to regroup and refocus for tomorrow,” Maurer said. “It’s obviously not the result we wanted, but we have to bounce back because everything is still up for grabs.”
