EASTON, Pa. – Lehigh snapped its offensive goal drought with a pair of goals in the first seven minutes as the Mountain Hawks cruised to a 2-0 win over arch rival Lafayette Saturday night at Mike Bourger Field at Oaks Stadium. In the process, the Mountain Hawks picked up their first Patriot League win of the season and snapped a four match losing streak. With the win, Lehigh’s seventh straight over the Leopards, the Mountain Hawks are now 5-8-1 overall and 1-3-0 in league matches.
It took just over four minutes for Lehigh to snap its 395 minute scoreless streak as the Mountain Hawks took the early lead on an own goal, as a cross from freshman Genna Pepe was put into the net by the Leopards’ Caitlin Kennedy.
Just over two minutes later, the Mountain Hawks struck again as Ali MacLeod hit the post with a shot and then pounced on her own rebound and finished for her second goal of the season.
The Mountain Hawks defense took over from there, keeping Lafayette off the scoreboard for the final 83 minutes en route to the team’s fifth shutout win of the season.
Lehigh outshot its rival by a 9-8 margin and held a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Mains made seven saves to earn her fifth clean sheet of the year.
“It was great to finally put a couple of goals on the board and pick up a Patriot League win,” said Lehigh head coach Manny Oudin. “It’s a good result to get us back on track. We’ll take it one game at a time but hopefully we can continue and build on this result as we prepare for our final three games.”
The Mountain Hawks return to the pitch on Friday night when they host Bucknell. Game time is set for 7 p.m. from the Ulrich Sports Complex and all the action can be seen live at Lehighsports.com with streaming powered by Yahoo! Sports College Broadcast.
