BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh’s Patriot League tournament aspirations took a major hit on Friday night as the Mountain Hawks fell to Bucknell 2-0 at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The visiting Bison scored twice within a three and  a half minute span in the first half to earn the win, and drop Lehigh to 5-9-1 overall and 1-4 in the Patriot League. Bucknell is now 9-5-2, 3-2 in league matches.

The Bison capitalized on some suspect marking in the back to open the scoring in the 16th minute as Jennifer Dervarics found Christa Matlack at the top of the six yard box. Matlack slid the ball into the net for her seventh goal of the season to put the visitors up 1-0. In the 20th minute Bucknell extended its lead after the Mountain Hawk defense had some difficulty clearing the ball out of the 18-yard box. Kelliann Doherty found herself unmarked in the middle of the box and fired a shot past sophomore Lauren Mains to make it a 2-0 game in favor of Bucknell.

“What was disappointing was that we were controlling the flow and playing well,” said Lehigh head coach Manny Oudin. “We can’t give teams two opportunities like we have Bucknell. They were opportunistic tonight and we weren’t.”

Lehigh picked up its offensive effort after going down by two goals, but despite a 12-8 advantage in shots and a 7-5 edge in corner kicks. Freshman Ali MacLeod led the charge with four shots including three on goal, while senior Emily Means and sophomore Glynn Fitzer added two apiece.

“In the second half we fought hard,” added Oudin. “We didn’t play poorly, but we just didn’t create enough chances in the final third.”

Kathryn Sutton made seven saves to earn the shutout for Bucknell. Mains finished with three saves in goal for the Brown and White.

The Mountain Hawks will wrap-up their home schedule on Sunday afternoon when they host the Colgate Raiders. Game time is set for 1 p.m. and all the action can be seen on Lehighsports.com with streaming video powered by Yahoo! Sports.
