WASHINGTON – Once again a Lehigh women’s soccer game remained scoreless into the final minutes, and on Friday it was American’s Brooke Sheppard scoring with six and a half minutes to play, propelling the Eagles to a 1-0 victory over the Mountain Hawks at Reeves Field. Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Mains made seven saves for the Mountain Hawks, who were locked in a defensive battle before American scored its first goal since September 14, a span of nearly eight matches.
With the setback, Lehigh drops to 0-2 in league matches and 4-6-1 overall. American snapped a seven match losing streak and is now 4-9-1 overall and 1-1 in the league.
The two teams battled without a goal into the 83rd minute when Sheppard took a feed from Kelsey Brasher and fired a shot into the upper right corner of the net for her first goal of the season and the team’s first tally since Kristyn Hodge scored in the Eagles’ 1-0 win over Towson nearly one month ago.
Lehigh was led by junior Liz Carlos, who fired a team-high four shots on the afternoon. Junior Natalie Hojnacki added a pair of shots for the Mountain Hawks, who were outshot 13-9 on the day, but held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Kelsey Wiggins turned aside three Lehigh shots to earn the shutout in goal for American.
The Mountain Hawks will return to the pitch in search of their first league win on Sunday when they travel to defending league champion Navy. Game time is set for 1 p.m. from the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility in Annapolis, Maryland.
