BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh evened its record at 4-4, erasing an early deficit to defeat La Salle 3-1 on a hot, humid Friday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Junior Kara Zweizig and senior Christy Smith each netted a goal and an assist for the Mountain Hawks, who made the most of their penalty corner opportunities, scoring two of their three goals off of corners.

It was the visiting Explorers who struck first as Colleen Lechner scored off a rebound of Kelly Dougherty’s shot to give La Salle a 1-0 lead after eight minutes.

Lehigh tied the game in the 21st minute off a penalty corner, as sophomore Lindsey Smith deflected a drive from junior Kalynn Davies past goalkeeper Ellen Axelsen for her second goal of the season.

Two minutes later, the Mountain Hawks took the lead as Christy Smith created a turnover and played a ball into the scoring circle, which Zweizig was able to redirect home for her fifth goal of the year.

In the second half, Lehigh took advantage of another corner opportunity, as Christy Smith scored on a long drive from the edge of the circle, with Zweizig and senior Marny Hearn earning assists. The goal was Smith’s third of the season and second in as many games.

La Salle out shot Lehigh 10-8, but Lehigh’s 7-4 advantage in corners helped Lehigh to the victory.

“I thought we possessed the ball well and transferred it well across the field,” said Lehigh head coach Julie Mazer. “Our decision making was good today, and we played with a lot of poise.”

Freshman Jessica Miller made seven saves for the Brown and White. With her goal, Zweizig has now scored the game winner in three of the Mountain Hawks four victories.

The Explorers fall to 5-5 on the year with the setback.

The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Sunday when they host Villanova at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast online at lehighsports.com with streaming video powered by Yahoo! Sports. The game will also be televised in the Lehigh Valley on Service Electric 2 Sports, Sunday at 5 p.m.
