NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Lehigh faced the first of three 2006 NCAA tournament participants on its schedule on Sunday evening, and Rutgers showed why its one of the nation’s top teams, as the 12th ranked Scarlet Knights knocked off the Mountain Hawks 2-0 at Yurcak Field. The Mountain Hawks hung tough against the talented Scarlet Knights, but with the loss evened their record at 1-1 on the season, while Rutgers improved to 2-0.

Rutgers held a commanding 18-2 advantage in shots, and earned the only two corner kicks of the match, but Lehigh head coach Manny Oudin was pleased with his team’s effort, particularly in the second half.

“The second half was significantly different than the first,” said Oudin. “We came out very strong and played hard. We gave up a second goal late, but that was mainly because we had pushed forward looking to tie the game. We played a great second half against a good team.”

Scarlet Knights sophomore Karla Schacher gave her team the lead with a goal 28 minutes in. Lehigh pressed for an equalizer through the second half, but only mustered shots from junior Allie Caldwell and freshman Glynn Fitzer. Rheanne Sleiman added an insurance goal in the 86th minute.

Junior Julie Kafka played the first half in goal and made six saves for the Brown and White, while freshman Lauren Mains made one save in the second half. Rutgers’ Erin Guthrie made one save to earn the shutout.

The Mountain Hawks will return to the pitch on Friday night when they play host to the Red Foxes of Marist. Game time is set for 7 p.m. from the Ulrich Sports Complex.
