Lions end Lehigh’s winning streak

9/15/2007 12:00:00 AM | Field Hockey

NEW YORK- Columbia put an end to Lehigh’s three game winning streak, as the Lions beat the Mountain Hawks 2-1 Saturday afternoon in New York.  Senior Christy Smith scored the lone Lehigh goal of the game, as the Mountain Hawks fall to 3-4 on the season, while Columbia improves its record to 2-3.

The Lions got on the board first with a goal by Jacqui Munro in the 20th minute.  The goal came off a corner from Erin Bogue and Liz Reeve, it was Munro’s second goal of the season.  The score would remain the same going into halftime, thanks in large part to Lehigh goalie Jessica Miller as she stopped five shots in the half.

Columbia wasted no time getting back on the board in the second half, as Christine Buszczak notched her second goal of the season in the 58th minute.  The Mountain Hawks would make it a one goal game again less than one minute later as Smith found the back of the cage.  The goal came off a corner, with Julie Kuhns getting the assist.  The goal was the second of the season for Smith, while Kuhns picked up her first point of the year.

After the goal, Columbia let its defense take over and would not allow to Mountain Hawks another shot in the game.  Miller stopped a total of eight shots in net for Lehigh, while her counterpart Gena Miller stopped two shots to record the win.

Lehigh returns to action on Friday September 21, when they host the LaSalle Explorers at the Ulrich Sports Complex.  The game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. and the game will be broadcast online at Lehighsports.com with streaming powered by Yahoo! Sports.
