BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh and Villanova needed overtime on Friday evening to determine a winner but after 110 minutes of action, no winner was determined, as the Mountain Hawks and Wildcats played to a 1-1 draw.  Senior Jen Fetsick scored Lehigh’s goal off an assist from classmate Melissa Montalvo in the 55th minute as the Mountain Hawks record goes to 3-1-1 and Villanova now sits at 4-0-2.

“We battled so hard for 85 minutes and got a great goal from Jen (Fetsick),” head coach Manny Oudin explained afterwards.  “Give them (Villanova) credit because they kept the pressure on and kept coming with it there at the end.  Obviously they’re a great team, but I’m pleased with how we battled and gave ourselves a chance to beat a quality opponent like Villanova.”

After a physical first half that yielded zero goals, the teams headed for the second stanza.  Lehigh got on the board first when Fetsick took a pass from Montalvo and netted her second goal of the season at the 54:47 mark to make it a 1-0 match in favor of the Brown and White.  Lehigh’s defense held strong from that point on, as Villanova was unable to muster any offense.  But that changed when Rachel Schuyler blasted a rebound into the back of the net to knot the score at one with less than six minutes left on the clock.

The two teams battled for the remainder of regulation and through two overtime periods with neither squad able to score and so they settled for the tie.

Villanova took 15 shots on the evening, while Lehigh took ten, led by Fetsick’s four.  Schuyler led the visitors with five shot attempts.  Junior Julie Kafka got the start in goal for the Brown and White and was credited with one save in her 45 minutes of action before giving way to freshman Lauren Mains, who stopped three Wildcat shots in 65 minutes of play.  Villanova goal keeper Jillian Loyden played the entire 110 minutes and stopped four shots on the evening.

Lehigh returns to action on Sunday afternoon when the Mountain Hawks travel to New Jersey to take on the Hawks of Monmouth.  Game time is set for 1:00 from West Long Branch.
