WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Lehigh played its third consecutive overtime game on Sunday afternoon, and for the second straight contest the Mountain Hawks had to settle for a tie after 110 minutes, as Lehigh and Monmouth played to a 2-2 draw on The Great Lawn. Sophomore Liz Carlos put Lehigh ahead with 30 minutes to play, but Andrea Lopez forced extra time with a goal in the 76th minute. The Mountain Hawks now stand at 3-1-2, while the Hawks are 1-2-2.

It was Monmouth striking first as Brittany Heller headed in Amy Moyer’s corner kick for her first goal of the season. The Hawks took a 1-0 lead into halftime, out shooting the Mountain Hawks 10-0 in the first 45 minutes. Junior Julie Kafka made six saves in the first half to help keep Lehigh in the game.

In the second half, Carlos helped Lehigh pull level as her crossing pass found the head of freshman Glynn Fitzer, who knotted the game at one with her second goal of the season. Carlos then gave Lehigh the lead as she closed out a two-on-one by scoring her second goal of the season. Freshman Lena Cannon assisted on the goal.

Monmouth pulled even when Lopez beat three Lehigh defenders in the box and beat freshman Lauren Mains for her second goal of the season.

Neither team was able to break the deadlock in two overtime periods, with Monmouth holding a 5-3 advantage in shots. The Hawks had a commanding advantage in shots on the afternoon, out shooting Lehigh 25-6 on the day. Monmouth also held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Mains played the final 65 minutes in goal, making six saves.

The Mountain Hawks will return to the pitch on Friday when they host Saint Joseph’s. Game time is set for 7 p.m. from the Ulrich Sports Complex.
