BETHLEHEM, Pa. – A pair of Lehigh freshmen scored in their collegiate debuts and the Mountain Hawk defense pitched a shutout as Lehigh blanked Quinnipiac 2-0 Friday on opening night at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Sophomore newcomer Liz Carlos added a pair of assists for the Brown and White, who win their opener for the fourth straight year.

Lehigh opened the scoring sixteen minutes in when Carlos fed freshman Glynn Fitzer, who beat Chloe Beizer to the corner of the net to put the Mountain Hawks on top.

“We knew coming in that Glynn was going to be a great contributor for us,” said Lehigh head coach Manny Oudin. “She came into camp extremely fit, and worked extremely hard through the preseason, and that hard work showed in her performance tonight.”

The Mountain Hawks extended their lead in the second half, when Carlos’ shot ricocheted off the crossbar, right to freshman Lena Cannon, who tapped it home to make it 2-0.

“Liz had a really good spring, so we knew she would do well,” said Oudin, who improved to 4-2 in season openers, and 4-0 versus Quinnipiac. “When she walked onto the team last fall we saw something in her, and her high level of play has continued into the season.”

Defensively, Lehigh was able to keep Quinnipiac off the board, despite being out shot 9-7. The Bobcats also held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks. Junior Julie Kafka played the first half in goal and made two saves to earn the win, while freshman Lauren Mains made her debut in the second half and made one save to preserve the shutout.

The Mountain Hawks will return to the pitch on Sunday when they travel to No. 12 Rutgers. Game time is set for 5 p.m. from New Brunswick, N.J.
