8/26/2007 12:00:00 AM | Field Hockey

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Temple scored a pair of second half goals to break a 1-1 tie and defeat Lehigh 3-1 in the resumption of Saturday night’s suspended season opener Sunday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Mandi Ruth scored the game winner for Temple in the 43rd minute to drop the Mountain Hawks to 0-1 on the season, while the Owls improve to 1-0.

“We came out very organized and played well at the end of the first half,” said Lehigh head coach Julie Mazer. “In the second half we simply had too many breakdowns.”

Lehigh scored its only goal in the 20th minute, as freshman Claire Horn scored off an assist from sophomore Kelly Fox to tie the game at one. Six minutes later, the game was halted due to lightning and eventually suspended until Sunday morning.

The Owls dominated statistically in the second half, out shooting Lehigh 17-0 and holding a 13-0 advantage in penalty corners over the second 35 minutes.

Freshman Jessica Miller did her part in the goal cage, making 12 saves, including a diving stop of a penalty stroke off the stick of Temple’s Alli Lokey in the second half.

“We couldn’t ask for more from Jessica as a freshman goalkeeper,” said Mazer. “She made some big saves that kept us in the game. “

Temple netted an insurance goal in the 52nd minute when Dannah Brehm found the back of the cage.

For the game, Temple out shot Lehigh 25-4 and the Owls held a 14-2 advantage in penalty corners.

The Mountain Hawks will return to the turf on Friday when they host Cornell. Game time is set for 7 p.m. from the Ulrich Sports Complex.
