Lehigh trailed early in the game as Duquesne took a 3-0 lead at the end of the second inning. With Clauson and O’Connor in scoring position in the top of the third, junior Joe Ercolano hit a sac fly to right field that allowed Clauson to score from third to make the score 3-1.
The Mountain Hawks had the bases loaded in the top of the fifth when Ercolano was at the plate with one out. Duquesne’s Gary Pierpont walked Ercolano, which allowed freshman Billy Swenson to cross home plate and O’Connor and Clauson to advance to second and third, respectively. Duquesne retook the lead with two runs in the sixth inning, but the Mountain Hawks would not trail for long as they scored four in the seventh to take an 8-5 lead. Ercolano’s single drove in senior David Moscow and Clauson and then senior Nick Bet’s single brought in O’Connor and Ercolano.
In the bottom of the ninth, sophomore Geoff Campbell walked Derek Mechling, but got Aaron Janusey to fly out to center field. Mechling then advanced to third off a Pat Kimiutis single.
