BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh snapped a four-game losing streak on Tuesday afternoon by downing Fairfield 11-10 at the Ulrich Sports Complex.  Sophomore Sara MacIntyre led the way for the Brown and White with four goals, while freshman Inneke Carmola recorded five points and senior Vienna Pharaon added four.  With the win, the Mountain Hawks improve to 2-4 on the season, while the visiting Stags drop to 3-5.

“This was critical for us to win today,” explained third year head coach Liz Ota afterwards.  “We did a great job against a very good Fairfield team and now have to get ready for our league opener on Saturday.”  She continued, “I was thrilled with the way Seana (Smith) played on defense, she was huge for us on the defensive end of the field.  We received a great effort from our attack, led by Sara MacIintyre and her four goals, while Vienna Pharaon, with two goals and two assists, and Inneke Carmola, with two goals and three assists, including the game-winner, were very solid.”

Ota added, “The pressure that we received in our previous games versus Vanderbilt and Drexel really paid off well for us today because I thought we handled Fairfield’s pressure well.”

Kylee Martin got the scoring started for Fairfield at the 25:45 mark to put the visitors up 1-0 early, but Lehigh scored the game’s next three goals, including two from MacIntyre and one from Carmola, to go in front 3-1 with 16:31 left in the opening half.  Following a score by the Stags to make it a one-goal game, Pharaon netted her first score of the day at the 12:55 mark and Lehigh was back in front by two, at 4-2.  Martin then brought the visitors to within one, but Pharaon and MacIntyre netted back-to-back goals to close out the half and sent Lehigh into the break ahead 6-3.

In the second half, sophomore Kyle Roth and junior Christy Smith scored back-to-back goals of their own and Lehigh was rolling, ahead 8-3 with 25:56 remaining in the game.  Fairfield refused to go away though and scored the game’s next three goals to make the score 8-6 at the 14:42 clip.  Senior Lissy King made the score 9-6 off of a feed from Carmola, and MacIntyre netted her 13th score of the season off of a pass from Pharaon to put the Brown and White ahead 10-6 at the 11:48 mark.

The Stags again came back however, and scored three straight to close within one score at the 7:12 mark.  Carmola then gave the Mountain Hawks some breathing room when she scored what proved to be the game-winner with 3:47 to go off of a feed from Christy Smith on an isolation play.  Lara Hannigan made the score 11-10 with just over a minute-and-a-half left, but freshman Kelsy Ferris made sure that was as close as Fairfield would get as she stuffed a free position attempt by the Stags and helped Lehigh snap its four-game slide.

Fairfield out shot Lehigh 30-24 for the game, but Lehigh held a decided advantage in ground balls, scooping up 23 to the Stags’ 15.  Lehigh was nine-of-14 on clear attempts and forced 14 Fairfield turnovers.  The Mountain Hawks were one-of-two on free position shots, while the Stags were four-of-nine.

Ferris had a very solid day in goal for the Brown and White, sending back 15 Fairfield shots, while Lauren Chatnik recorded ten stops in goal for the visitors.  Roth and Seana Smith led the Mountain Hawks with four ground balls apiece, while a quartet of Lehigh players won two draw controls each.

Lehigh returns to action on Saturday when the Mountain Hawks open up Patriot League play versus the Bucknell Bison.  Game time is set for 1:00 at the Ulrich Sports Complex and all of the action can be seen and heard live on lehighsports.com.
