AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – With no seeded wrestlers for the first time in 16 years, Lehigh knew it had its hands full on day one of the 77th NCAA Championships at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Freshman David Craig earned a win by major decision over Bloomsburg’s Nate Shirk, but six other Lehigh grapplers lost their first round matches and will wrestle in consolations on Thursday night.

Craig scored Lehigh’s only two team points of the session and with his victory will face No. 4 seed Tyrel Todd of Michigan in the round of 16. The freshman yielded the first takedown, but after escaping took Shirk down to his back for two and a three point near fall. Craig added a second period tilt and nearly pinned Shirk before settling for three near fall points and the major decision.

The only other match that pitted a Mountain Hawk against an unseeded wrestler was at 125 where Matt Fisk lost by major decision to Penn State 12-4.

At 133, freshman Seth Ciasulli lost a tough decision to Illinois freshman Jimmy Kennedy by a 7-4 score.

Senior Matt Ciasulli had his hands full with top seed Ryan Lang of Northwestern at 141. Ciasulli kept things within reach for nearly five minutes, before missing on a shrug attempt and eventually being taken down for five points as the second period expired. Lang added a riding time point in the third for a 6-0 victory.

Junior Dave Nakasone yielded a pair of early takedowns, and fell to Pittsburgh’s No. 11 seed Matt Kocher 9-2.

The final two Lehigh bouts pitted Mountain Hawk wrestlers against high seeds from Northwestern. At 197, Matt Cassidy gave up a first period takedown and a late third period score as he fell to No. 3 seed Mike Tamillow 6-0.

At heavyweight, Paul Weibel battled back from an early 4-1 deficit to take a 5-4 lead over No. 4 seed Dustin Fox. In the third period, Fox escaped and converted two takedowns of his own to win 10-6.

After the first session, Lehigh is tied with several schools for 42nd place. Minnesota placed all nine of its qualifiers in the round of 16 and sits in first place with 22 points, followed by Missouri, Iowa State, Penn State and Iowa.

Action at the 77th NCAA Championships continues Thursday night with the second championship round and the first consolation round beginning at 6:30 pm. All of Lehigh’s matches can be heard online at lehighsports.com with streaming powered by Yahoo! Sports.
