Lehigh upends American to earn Sunday split

WASHINGTON – Lehigh improved to 2-0 in the EIWA with a 27-15 victory over American Sunday evening at Bender Arena. The Mountain Hawks bounced back with seven wins, including six of the bonus variety to earn a Sunday split in Maryland/Washington D.C. area. Earlier in the day, Lehigh saw it three dual winning streak snapped with a 25-9 loss to No. 24 Maryland at Comcast Center Pavilion. The Mountain Hawks now stand at 4-5 overall, 2-0 in the EIWA.

 

In the nightcap against American Lehigh used a pair of bonus wins and a forfeit to build a 15-0 lead after three bouts. Sophomore David Craig was dominant in a 15-0 technical fall over Andrew Semple, in a bout that was clinched with just two seconds remaining. Sophomore Alex Iacocca followed with an impressive 11-3 major decision over Brooks Keefer at 197.

 

The Eagles closed the gap with wins at 125, 133 and 141, including a win by fall from American sophomore Kyle Borshoff over senior Jeff Santo at 141. Junior Trevor Chinn put Lehigh back on track though, collecting seven takedowns in a 16-5 major decision over Nick Pitas at 149. Senior Dave Nakasone then followed, with two key third period takedowns in a win over Chris Stout at 157.

 

Sophomore Mike Galante dropped a 7-2 decision to No. 11 Mike Cannon, but freshman Alex Caruso closed the dual on a high note with a ten takedown performance, including five in the third period, plus a reversal and two point near fall in a 24-9 technical fall win over Jonathan Powell. Lehigh improves to 3-0 all time versus the Eagles with the victory.

 

In Sunday’s afternoon dual, No. 24 Maryland won seven of ten bouts en route to its first win over Lehigh since 1993. Craig gave Lehigh an early 3-0 lead with a 7-4 win over Josh Haines in a battle of nationally ranked wrestlers at 184. Craig scored a three point near fall in the second period and added a takedown in the third. From there, the Terrapins rolled off four straight victories, including bonus wins at 197 and 125 to take a 16-3 lead at the intermission.

 

Santo stopped the Maryland run with a win in the first bout after the break. Santo scored two first period takedowns and added a second period reversal before holding on to defeat Jon Kohler 8-6 at 141. Maryland took the next two bouts, as Eric Medina won a close 5-3 decision over Chinn, and Brian Letters won 8-2 over Nakasone. Galante picked up Lehigh’s third and final win, scoring a takedown in each period to defeat Mike McGill 8-3.

 

The final bout of the dual pitted seventh ranked Mike Letts against Caruso at 174. After a scoreless first period, Letts scored takedowns in the second and third periods to win 6-3, and cement what is just Maryland’s third-ever dual win versus Lehigh.
