BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Mountain Hawks ended their 2007 season with a 1-0 over first place Colgate, Saturday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Jim Taranto scored the game winner in the 86th minute to give Lehigh the victory. With the win, Lehigh improves its record to 8-7-2 (3-4-0), while the Raiders fall to 8-5-4 (4-1-2). The victory also gave Lehigh its 12th consecutive winning season, already a Patriot League record.
“It was an important win for us, especially for our seniors,” said head coach Dean Koski. “This class continued on the winning tradition that was established when they arrived here. I am really happy for our seniors to end their careers like that, being able to beat a very good team that is going onto the Patriot League Tournament.”
The teams played to a scoreless first half, with the Raiders out shooting Lehigh 5-2, but the Mountain Hawks were able to take advantage of their shots as Lehigh had two shots on goal, compared to just one for Colgate. The second half featured much of the same, as Colgate continued to ride the Lehigh defense; however, the Brown and White would turn it on in the final 15 minutes to come away with the victory.
Jim Taranto picked up his fifth goal of the season when he was able to put home a Kyle Evans rebound for the game winning goal. Evans picked up his third assist of the year and league leading 25th point.
Jonathan Nydell was able to make some keys saves down the stretch to help secure the Lehigh win. The freshman goalkeeper made four saves in the game, while his counterpart David Cappuccio stopped six shots.
“I’m disappointed we weren’t able to make the tournament this year,” said Koski. “We were our own worse enemy at times and had some really tough losses. I’m just really happy that our senior class was able to come away with a win tonight and finish their careers on a positive note.”
