Lehigh women edge Army; men fall in home finale

On the women’s side Lehigh and Army split 16 events, with the Mountain Hawks accumulating just enough points to edge the Black Knights by two. Senior Julie Mitchell led the charge, winning both backstroke events. Mitchell took the 100 back in 1:00.48 and the 200 in 2:09.32.
Sophomore Melanie Rolish established new school and Jacobs Pool records in winning the 100 and 200 breast. She finished the 100 in 1:05.59 and the 200 in 2:21.73. Sister Allison took first place in the 1000 free, touching the wall in 10:34.23 and also won the 500 free. Freshman Claire Winiarski won the 200 fly in a time of 2:12.56.
Senior Betsy Balaguer also contributed significant team points; placing second in the 1000 free the 200 free and the 500 free.
The Lehigh men managed to win six individual events as senior Tom Gilbert, junior Clark Cohen and sophomore Dan Johnson won two events apiece. Gilbert swept the backstroke events, taking the 100 back in 53.41 and the 200 back in 1:55.40. Johnson took top honors in the 50 free with a time of 21.87 and the 200 free with a mark of 1:41.78. Cohen swept both the one and three meter diving events.
The Mountain Hawks will return to the pool on Saturday, when they visit Bucknell. The meet gets underway at 2 p.m. from Kinney Natatorium in
