Weather forces suspension of Lehigh-WCU tilt

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Thursday night’s field hockey game between Lehigh and West Chester has been suspended prior to the start of the second half due to inclement weather, including lightning, near the Ulrich Sports Complex. The game will be finished at a date and time still to be determined, and will be resumed with the Mountain Hawks leading 2-1 at halftime.

Lehigh was looking to snap a four game losing streak, and the Mountain Hawks started out strong. Sophomore Kara Zweizig found the back of the cage 2:36 into the contest off a feed from junior Terry Mongan. The goal is Zweizig’s team-leading fourth of the season.

West Chester tied the game at one in the 13th minute when after a penalty corner Adrienne Tyson slid a pass to her left, which Shelly Brooks shot past Lehigh goalkeeper Stephanie Palmieri for her seventh goal of the year.

The tie was broken two and a half minutes before the half when the Smith sisters combined to put the Mountain Hawks on top. Freshman Lindsey centered a pass from the right side, which junior Christy was able to deflect home for her third goal of the season.

Minutes before the second half was to start, lightning was spotted and the field was cleared. After about a half-hour delay, the game was suspended.

The Golden Rams out shot the Mountain Hawks 9-8 in the first half and had six penalty corners to three for Lehigh. Each goalkeeper was credited with four saves in the half.

While they wait for a date of resumption to be determined, the Mountain Hawks will open Patriot League play Saturday afternoon when they return to action against Bucknell. Game time is set for 1:00 pm from Lewisburg, Pa.
