PHILADELPHIA – Playing in its final tune-up before Patriot League play begins next weekend Lehigh rallied late to force overtime and went on to defeat La Salle 2-1 in double overtime Sunday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium. Senior Lauren Calabrese netted the game winner after junior Jen Fetsick tied the game with five minutes to play, to give the Mountain Hawks the win in a tough, physical game that saw the teams combine for 40 fouls. The win ups the Brown and White’s record to 4-5, while the Explorers are now 3-6.
“This was a really good win for our team in terms of building confidence heading into league play,” said Lehigh head coach Manny Oudin. “We don’t have any more matches until Saturday, so we’ll have the whole week to work on things, and hopefully we can build on today’s result heading into league play.”
The two teams battled through almost 80 minutes of scoreless soccer, before
Lehigh, however, remained resilient and secured an equalizer five minutes later when Fetsick flicked home sophomore Hailey Coonrad’s 40 yard free kick for her first goal of the season.
Playing overtime for the fourth time this season, Lehigh finally secured a game winner in the third minute of the second overtime period. The Mountain Hawks had another long free kick and this time senior Daniela Molina corralled the kick and slid it over to Calabrese, who turned and fired past Lauren Malizia to give Lehigh its second overtime win of the season.
Sophomore Julie Kafka did her part to keep Lehigh in the game, making eight saves.
The Mountain Hawks will continue their four match road trip when they return to the pitch next Saturday night, as Lehigh opens Patriot League play against arch-rival
