Lehigh rallies, but falls in OT to Stony Brook

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – For the second straight game Lehigh mounted late second half rally to force overtime, but on Sunday the extra period was not as kind to the Mountain Hawks, who fell 3-2 to Stony Brook at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Senior Lauren Calabrese scored the equalizer with under 10 minutes to play, but the Seawolves’ Marissa Shibley pounced on a rebound off a free kick to score the game winner in the final minute of the second overtime period. Lehigh’s record evens at 1-1 with the loss, while Stony Brook improves to 2-0 on the season.

The Mountain Hawks struck first on a rainy, overcast Sunday afternoon, as senior Daniela Molina’s attempted cross floated past Marisa Viola into the back of the net for her second goal of the season. Freshman Alex Warren assisted on the goal, which gave Lehigh a 1-0 advantage.

Stony Brook tied the game in the 56th minute as Jackie Timmes’ free kick deflected in off the head of Lehigh sophomore Amy Mastromonaco for an own goal. Just over 10 minutes later, Brooke Barbuto dribbled her way past the Lehigh defense and beat Julie Kafka to give the Seawolves’ the advantage.

Playing from behind for the second straight night, Calabrese tied things up when Viola had trouble handling a wet ball in the box. Calabrese picked up the ball in space and rolled it home to even the game at two.

After an uneventful first 10 minute overtime period, Lehigh nearly won the game in the second OT, but an apparent Mountain Hawks goal was disallowed because of an offside. Moments later, Stony Brook came down the field and drew a foul at the top of the 18 yard box. Trine Allenberg’s free kick was saved by Kafka, but Shibley banged home the rebound to give the Seawolves the last second win.

“We made some progress from Friday night,” said head coach Manny Oudin. “It’s simple though. We can’t give up three goals in a game and expect to win. We were able to create some of our own opportunities, but we have to do a better job finishing our chances. “

Lehigh will take to the road for the first time in 2006 when the Mountain Hawks return to action on Friday at Quinnipiac. Game time is set for 4:00 pm from Hamden, Connecticut.
