Mountain Hawks tenth after day two at NCAAs

3/17/2006 12:00:00 AM | Men's Wrestling

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Lehigh’s individual national title hopes came to an end in the semifinal round, but the Mountain Hawks have crowned three All-Americans and sit in tenth place with 46 points after day two of the NCAA Championships at Ford Center. Seniors Cory Cooperman and Derek Zinck suffered heartbreaking losses in the national semifinals, while Travis Frick won two matches on Friday night to become a two-time All-American.

Cooperman was edged by No. 2 seed and longtime nemesis Teyon Ware of Oklahoma. After a scoreless first period, Ware escaped in the second period and utilized his strength to ride out Cooperman for most of the third period for a 2-1 win. Cooperman will wrestle Brandon Rader of West Virginia in Saturday’s consolation semifinals.

Zinck was equally unlucky in his match with No. 10 seed Brian Stith of Arizona. Stith scored takedowns in the first and second periods to build a 4-1 lead and held on for a 5-3 victory at 157. Eleventh seeded Zinck will now face top seed Trent Paulson of Iowa State on Saturday.

Lehigh’s third All-American, Frick won two tough matches to stay alive. Frick first defeated Kenneth Robertson of Eastern Illinois 6-5 to reach All-American status, then scored a takedown in the final 20 seconds to down Jacob Klein of Nebraska 3-1. Frick will next face Mark Perry of Iowa in the consolations. All three Lehigh All-Americans can place anywhere from third to sixth depending on Saturday’s results.

“The good news is we got a lot of upsets, in terms of beating higher seeds and today we didn’t get upset once,” said head coach Greg Strobel. “We didn’t lose when we were supposed to win.”

Oklahoma State appears to be well on its way to its fourth straight team title, racking up 106 team points, leading second place Minnesota by 33.5 points.

The 2006 NCAA Championships will wrap up with two sessions on Saturday. The morning session, featuring consolation semifinals and placement matches gets underway at 10:00 am CST. Audio coverage of the morning session will be available online at lehighsports.com with streaming powered by Yahoo! Sports. The championship finals will begin at 6:30 CST and will be televised nationally on ESPN.
