Monmouth rallies past Lehigh in overtime

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Three Lehigh players scored in double figures, led by 17 points from senior Adrienne Blount, but it was not enough as Monmouth erased a ten-point second half deficit en route to a 72-65 overtime win on Wednesday night at Boylan Gym. Junior Kaela Pearce scored a career-high 14 points and pulled down a personal best six rebounds for Lehigh (2-4) on the night. Monmouth improves to 4-2 with the win.
Monmouth got out to a quick 10-6 lead in the first 6:11 of the game before water leaking onto the court would delay the game for approximately ten minutes. When play resumed, the Hawks got two points from Nyaimah Ware to increase the Monmouth lead, but a three-pointer by Pearce and two more points from Blount pulled the Mountain Hawks to within one.
Monmouth would build a seven point lead with 4:35 left in the half to give the Hawks a 20-13 advantage over the Brown and White. However, Lehigh mounted another comeback, eveninge score at 20-20 with 2:06 left to play. Jennifer Bender gave Monmouth a 22-20 lead on a lay-up with 1:17 remaining. As the shot clock nearly expired, a Monmouth foul sent Blount to the line two seconds later, who sank both her attempts. Senior Sara Ellis nailed a jumper as time expired to give Lehigh a 24-22 lead going into the half. Ellis’ jumper also pushed her over the 1,100 point mark as she came into the game only needing four more points to reach the barrier.
