Lehigh puts finishing touches on fall season

PHILADELPHIA - Lehigh recently traveled to the Schuylkill River to compete in the Frostbite Regatta. It was a beautiful day to be racing and to be a spectator cheering on the crews coming down the river. This race is typically the last of the fall season and it is the first race that is 2,000 meters in length.  Because of its length it can be used as a mark for crews to set goals for the spring season.

The first crew to come down the course for the Mountain Hawks was the Men’s Open Double consisting of B- Todd Mickelson and S- Andrew Younghein. They came across the line first, starting the day off on a positive note for the rest of the team. This victory led to five more gold medal races for the team.  The other victories for Head Coach Paul Savell were in the Women’s Lightweight Four ( C- Sara Michaels, S- Nicole McCormick, 3- Jen Keefe,2- Li-Ping Chew,1- Kristin Merlo), the Men’s Varsity Four (C- Kurt Schubert,S- Chris Hause,3- John Young,2- Joe Loguidice,1- Mark Chandler) this crew also beat rival school Lafayette. One more victory for the Head Coach was the Women’s Varsity Eight with the crew of C- Chelsea Crisafulli, S- Christine Pacioretty, 7- Jen Keefe, 6- Katie Ginda, 5- Ellen Sweet, 4- Kimmy Gagnon, 3- Danielle Iuliucci, 2- Amanda Eyler, and B- Ashley Pritchard.

Both of the Freshman Head Coaches led their crews’ race to victory. Coach Liz Meltzez had her Four containing the crew of C- Cali Roth, S- Sara Bittner, 3- Laura Schafer, 2- Steph Bojarski, and B- Emily Hunsperger. Not only was this the first win for the girls, but they also beat archrival Lafayette. Coach Jason Moorehead also had one of his eights come across the line first. The crew that made up that boat was C-Flip Luisi, S-Will Richens, 7- Matt Krenitsky, 6- Andrew Bartynski, 5- Derek Harrison, 4- Nick Minnella, 3- Matt Vanic, 2- Justin Ferreira, and B- Jim Gaylord.

The team has now finished their fall season of racing and will begin training indoors for the spring.

They will be traveling to Florida in early January for winter training in some warm conditions.
