BALTIMORE, Md. – Loyola broke a scoreless tie with four second half goals as the Greyhounds held off Lehigh 4-1 in a non-league match Tuesday afternoon at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field. Senior Lauren Fornuto scored her first goal of the season, but it was too little, too late as the Mountain Hawks fell to 5-6 on the season. Loyola improves to 3-5-2 with the victory.

“We played very well in the first half,” said Lehigh head coach Manny Oudin. “We definitely had chances but were unable to capitalize on the opportunities. We did not play as well in the second half, and that’s something we’re going to have to work on, putting together a full 90 minutes.”

The Mountain Hawks out shot Loyola 7-6 in the first half, but neither team could find the back of the net. The Greyhounds scored their first goal ten minutes into the second half when Kaitlin Klar fed Theresa Ferraina, who beat Julie Kafka from the right side. Fifty seconds later it was 2-0, as Carolyn Kennington beat Kafka from long distance with Klar netting her second of three assists on the day.

Loyola extended its lead with goals from Christina Gomez in the 74th minute and Sarra Moller in the 77th minute, before Fornuto netted Lehigh’s only goal on a long shot from 25 yards out. Freshman Alex Warren was credited with her second assist of the season on the play.

Lehigh was out shot 14-9 on the afternoon and had just two corner kicks to six for Loyola. Sophomore Julie Kafka made six saves before giving way to freshman Natalie Krane, who played 10 and a half minutes in her first collegiate action. Brittany Henderson made five stops for the Greyhounds.

The Mountain Hawks will return to the pitch this weekend with a pair of crucial league games at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Lehigh will host Colgate in the Mountain Hawks’ league home opener on Friday night, before battling defending Patriot League champion Bucknell on Sunday. Friday’s match-up with Colgate gets underway at 7:00 pm. The game will be broadcast online at lehighsports.com with streaming audio and video powered by Yahoo! Sports.
