Sacred Heart got on the board first when Colleen Carney scored on a penalty stroke at the 21:01 mark of the opening half. Lehigh came right back however, as Fricke took a pass from sophomore Christy Smith at the 24:36 mark, and found the back of the cage to knot the score at one. The score would remain tied at one heading into halftime, and again at the end of regulation.
The two teams battled through the first overtime, but remained tied, and so a second overtime session was needed. In that second OT, Jenna McLane took a pass from Carney and beat Lehigh goal keeper Meghan Gove at the 86:32 mark, sent Lehigh home with a loss. For the game, Lehigh had nine corners, while Sacred Heart had 12. The Mountain Hawks got off 19 shots, and the Pioneers had 29. In goal, Gove had yet another game of double digit saves, with 13, and Pioneer goal keeper Ashley Del Greco registered 14 saves of her own.
Head coach Julie Mazer offered her thoughts following the contest. “We need to finish, and score some more goals. Overall, it was a hard fought game. I thought we played hard the whole time we were out there, we just needed to score a few more times.”
Lehigh now has five days off to prepare for its Patriot League opener versus archrival
