Lehigh opens outdoor season in Happy Valley

4/3/2005 12:00:00 AM | Men's Track and Field, Track and Field, Women's Track and Field

State College, PA – Despite poor weather conditions for almost the entire day, Lehigh did open up its 2005 outdoor season on Saturday afternoon, as the Mountain Hawks traveled to compete in the Jim Thorpe Meet, held on the campus of Penn State University.  Unfortunately, the inclement weather forced all jumping events to be competed indoors, thus none of Saturday's marks are eligible to count towards NCAA Regional standards.

Outdoors on the track on the men’s side, freshman Waleed Amer took fourth place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.90 seconds.  He then followed that up with a seventh place finish in the 400-meters, crossing the finish line in a time of 50.68.  Senior Mark Swanson placed 15th in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:05, while sophomore Victor Vientos crossed the finish line in a time of 8:45, placing him in fifth place in the 3000-meter run.

In the high jump, Cody Smart cleared 1.80-meters, placing him in a tie for fourth place, while Matt Kostyal took seventh in the discus, with a toss of 35.44-meters.  Lehigh had a trio of runners finish in third through fifth place in the 3000-meter steeplechase, as Brendan Glover, Joseph Kelly and Pat Holmes all finished in under 11 minutes.

In the women’s meet, Melanie Conklin placed eighth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:03, while freshman Rachel Stewart took sixth place in the 100-meter dash and tenth place in the 200-meter dash.  The 4 x 400-relay team of Liz Haight, Conklin, Taylor Lubitz and Marie Chervanick placed fourth in that competition, racing their way to a time of 4:17.

Lauren King tied for sixth in the high jump, clearing 1.45-meters and freshman Emily Roth took third in the pole vault with an impressive showing of 3.20-meters.  Kristi Spittle recorded a throw of 41.03-meters in the hammer throw, placing her in fifth place and Sarah Csikos took ninth place in the javelin throw, with a toss of 22.13-meters.

Lehigh returns to action this Saturday morning, as the Mountain Hawks travel to Easton to take on archrival Lafayette.  The meet is scheduled to begin at 11:00 am.
