STILLWATER, Okla. – No. 10 Lehigh faced its toughest test of the season on Friday night, and top ranked Oklahoma State proved why they were the three-time defending national champions as the Cowboys won eight of the bouts en route to a 31-6 win at historic Gallagher-Iba Arena. The Mountain Hawks only mustered wins from Cory Cooperman at 141 and David Helfrich at 184 as Lehigh falls to 5-2 on the dual season. Oklahoma State improves to 2-0 with the victory.

The match started at 125 and while Lehigh’s lightweights fought a good battle, freshman Matt Fisk and sophomore Jeff Santo dropped close decisions as the Cowboys took a 6-0 lead.

Lehigh got on the scoreboard with Cooperman’s win over Daniel Frishkorn. The senior scored a first period takedown, earned a point for a technical violation and added a second period escape in a 4-1 win.

The Cowboys came back with one of two falls at 149 as defending national champion Zack Esposito pinned Lehigh freshman Trevor Chinn. Oklahoma State followed that up with three upsets to take a commanding lead. Kevin Ward scored a takedown with under a minute to go in the third period to edge Derek Zinck 3-2. It was a match-up of the top two wrestlers, and the last two national champions at 165, where OSU’s Johny Hendricks scored a third period escape and takedown to upset Lehigh’s top ranked Troy Letters 5-2 and hand the Lehigh senior just his fifth collegiate loss. A third upset occurred at 174 as Cowboy Freshman Brandon Mason scored a 9-1 major decision over Travis Frick.

The Mountain Hawks got their second win at 184 as Helfrich scored two first period takedowns and held on to beat Rusty Blackmon 5-3. Lehigh nearly pulled an upset at 197 where Paul Weibel lost to defending national champion Jake Rosholt 8-7. Weibel took down Rosholt twice, but gave up a five point move in the first that proved to be the difference.

Oklahoma State’s Steve Mocco built a 23-9 lead over Tom Curl before earning the pin in the second period to end the match.

The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Saturday as they will wrap up their trip to the Sooner State with a match against No. 4 Oklahoma. The match gets underway at 8:00 EST from McCasland Fieldhouse in Norman and will be broadcast on ESPN Radio 1230 and 1320 as well as online at lehighsports.com with streaming powered by Yahoo! Sports.
