“Gina is a terrific athlete, and she made a heck of a play,” said Lehigh head coach Manny Oudin following the win.
The victory was Lehigh’s 12th of the season, tying the 2004 squad’s school record for wins in a single campaign.
Friday’s match was very physical throughout the course of the night, particularly as the second half wore on. In all 20 fouls were called (15 on Lehigh) and three yellow cards were issued.
With Lehigh holding a one goal advantage, the Mountain Hawks had several late first half and early second half chances, but LU was unable to find the back of the net for a second time.
In the second half, Navy had seemingly endless opportunities, but the Midshipmen were unable to finish. Despite ripping 14 shots in the second half, Navy did not find the back of the net. The Midshipmen had six corner kicks on the night – four in the second half – to three corners for the Mountain Hawks.
Navy out-shot Lehigh 17-12 overall. Lehigh freshman Julie Kafka registered six saves on the night. For Navy, senior Haley Crain sent back three shots in 90 minutes of action.
“We were fortunate to get the [positive] result tonight,” Oudin explained. “We can’t let a good team, an athletic team, like Navy hang around. We have to learn how to put a quality team away when we have them on the ropes.”
Lehigh returns to the pitch on Sunday, when the Mountain Hawks welcome Patriot League foe American to the Ulrich Sports Complex for a 12:30 affair. The game can be seen live on the Lehigh web site at lehighsports.com with streaming provided by Yahoo! Sports. The contest will be rebroadcast at 3:30 that afternoon on Service Electric 2 Sports, and on Tuesday night nationally on Fox College Sports Atlantic.
