The Lehigh defense came out strong and held American scoreless for the first 14 minutes, but from there, the Eagles basically had their way on offense. Heidi Hershberger scored the game’s first goal at the 14:15 mark off of a feed from Camila Infante, and just 39 seconds later, Irene Schickhardt scored a goal of her own, an unassisted score to put the Eagles in front 2-0. Lehigh sliced the deficit in half, when senior Mary Beth Kuenne scored off of a corner play with assists going to Moira Garrity and Marissa Iannarone. With just under ten minutes remaining in the half, the Mountain Hawks were within one at 2-1.
American came right back however, as Infante scored her first goal of the day, as Schickhardt assisted, pushing the lead to 3-1 at the 27:24 mark. The Eagles added two more goals, one by Hershberger and another by Schickhardt to send the game into halftime, with Lehigh trailing 5-1.
The second half featured more of the same, with American scoring four more goals, one each by Schickhardt and Infante, and one each from Maureen Daniel and Erica Sheldon. Lehigh had two penalty corners to American’s nine for the game, while no Mountain Hawk had more than one shot on the day. Junior Stephanie Palmieri got her first start in the cage for Lehigh, and responded with 26 saves in 70 minutes of action. Allison Fayfich and Makinsie Sheridan split time in American’s goal, with neither recording a save.
Lehigh returns to action Wednesday evening when the Mountain Hawks welcome Rider to the Ulrich Sports Complex. Game time is set for 7:00.
