Mountain Hawks battle back but fall to Wagner

9/8/2004 12:00:00 AM | Volleyball

Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh battled back from a two games to none deficit to force a deciding fifth game but ultimately fell to Wagner 3-2 Wednesday night at the Leeman-Turner Arena. Game scores were 30-27, 30-23, 20-30, 27-30 and 15-12. With the loss the Mountain Hawks fall to 0-5 on the season. Wagner is 1-4.

Game one was a back and forth affair filled with ties and lead changes. The Seahawks would go on to win the game 30-27 and then take game two 30-23. The Mountain Hawks fought back in game three, jumping out to an early lead and coasting to their first game win of the season.

Lehigh went down 10-4 in game four but rattled off seven consecutive points to take the lead and held on to win the game 30-27.

“We played pretty good defense throughout,” said coach Amanda Moran, who also praised her team’s resiliency, adding “We did a nice job battling back.”

The deciding fifth game was another tight affair with the Seahawks running off several key points at the very end to seal their first victory of the season.

Lehigh was without junior captain Morgan Volkart who was injured in Saturday night’s loss to Appalachian State. Volkart’s injury left the Mountain Hawks without all three of their middle blockers.

“It’s very hard with all three middle hitters out,” Moran said. “We’ve had to play people out of position and it makes it difficult to win when your players are out of position.”

Nikki Barnes led the Mountain Hawks with 17 kills. Michelle Schwendenmann added 12. Kathleen Lafferty recorded 35 assists and Cassidy Maumus led the defense with 13 digs.

Wagner was lead by Jennine Porter’s 12 kills.

The Mountain Hawks return to action on Friday when they host the 7th Annual Mountain Hawk Classic. Marist will play North Carolina State at 4:30 followed by Lehigh against Columbia at 7:00. Saturday the Mountain Hawks will play Marist at 1:00 and North Carolina State at 7:30
