Fetsick's late score propels Lehigh to victory

9/7/2004 12:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer

Bethlehem, PA – Freshman Jen Fetsick scored her first collegiate goal, and it couldn’t have come at a better time for Lehigh, as the Mountain Hawks rallied past St. Joseph’s by a 2-1 score at the Ulrich Sports Complex Tuesday on a hot, muggy night.  The win improved Lehigh’s record to 3-2-0 on the season, while the Hawks fall to 1-3-0 in 2004.

In the first half, Lehigh got on the board first, as sophomore Gina Lewandowski scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season on a high shot that found the back of the net in the 16th minute.  Freshman Melissa Montalvo was credited with the assist, her second of the season.  St. Joe’s tied the match ten minutes later when Kati McCaffrey scored her second goal of the season, off a pass from Alisha Paine.

“I thought we played a spirited first half, and when we got that early goal, we had them on the ropes,” said Lehigh head coach Manny Oudin following the win.  “But we let them regain their confidence with a couple of mistakes, and that’s something we’ll have to work on.”

The second half began with a flurry of shots from each side, but both goalkeepers proved to be up to the challenge.  The Mountain Hawks finally broke the deadlock in the 89th minute.  St. Joseph’s goal keeper Jen Kuhn came out to challenge Fetsick, and the freshman calmly deposited the ball in the back of the net for the game winner.

“Jen did a great job of finishing,” Oudin explained.  “And anytime you can win two out of three in a five-day stretch like this, we’ll take it.”

Lehigh out-shot the Hawks on the night, 15-12.  The big discrepancy came on corner kicks, as the Mountain Hawks had eight corners to St. Joe’s one.  Senior captain Erin Iwaskiewicz was stellar as usual in net, notching five saves in 90 minutes of action.  St. Joseph’s freshman Jen Kuhn recorded seven saves in a losing effort.

The Mountain Hawks return to the pitch on Friday, when Lehigh visits Binghamton.  That match is scheduled to get underway at 4:00 from Vestal, NY.
