Binghamton outlasts Mountain Hawks, 1-0

9/10/2004 12:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer

Vestal, NY – Lehigh out-shot host Binghamton 16-13, but the Bearcats registered the only goal of the contest in a 1-0 victory over the Mountain Hawks on Friday afternoon.  The win improves Binghamton’s record to 3-1-0 on the season, while the setback drops the Mountain Hawks to 3-3-0 overall.

Both teams played strong defense in the first 45 minutes of action, as neither team was able to find the back of the net.  The Bearcats dented the scoreboard in the 60th minute, however, in what proved to be the lone goal of the match.  Binghamton’s Caitlin O’Shaughnessy beat Lehigh keeper Erin Iwaskiewicz off a feed from Maria Krug to give the Bearcats the one goal advantage.

That goal propelled the BU squad to victory, as the lead held up.

“We had a number of chances to finish, particularly in the second half,” Lehigh head coach Manny Oudin said after the match.  “Unfortunately, today we could’nt put them away.  It’s especially tough, though, when you have 16 shots and can’t come away with the score.   Nevertheless, we’ll come out hard on Sunday and be ready to go.”

Lehigh had six corner kicks to just two for the Bearcats on the night.  Senior captain Erin Iwaskiewicz continued her strong play in goal, notching six saves in 90 minutes of action.  Bignhamton’s Katie Bowers registered six stops as well.

The Mountain Hawks are back in action on Sunday, as Lehigh heads north to take on Dartmouth.  That match is scheduled to get underway at noon from Hanover, N.H.
