Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh dug itself an early hole and was never able to recover, as the Mountain Hawks fell 75-61 Monday night at Stabler Arena. The loss drops the Mountain Hawks under .500 on the season at 3-4, and snaps Lehigh’s 16 game home win streak.
Columbia improves to 4-1 with the victory.
Columbia jumped out to a 14-0 lead to start the game. The Lions’ charge was led by Matt Preston who scored 12 points on five of seven shooting. The Lions shot an astounding 53% from the field in the first half including 5 of 12 from behind the arc as Columbia led by as much as 20 points. The Mountain Hawks battled back, climbing to within four points, 41-37 at halftime. Junior Joe Knight connected on three field goals for nine points and added two steals, while Nick Monserez grabbed a team high seven boards.
The Mountain Hawks started the second half much better than the first and were able to hang with the Lions for duration of the stanza. Lehigh closed to within five with just over five minutes remaining, but Columbia always had an answer on the offensive end. The Brown and White could not seem to get any closer than the five point barrier due to Columbia’s timely shooting, tight defense and aggressive rebounding.
Lehigh shot only 31 percent from the field, including 6 of 20 from three point range. Knight led the Mountain Hawks with 18 points, while Erik Smith was the only other Lehigh player in double figures with 10. The Lions shot 53 percent on the night and were led by Matt Preston’s 17 points.
Coming into Monday’s game the Mountain Hawks had not lost at Stabler Arena since November of 2003 when Lehigh lost its home opener to Long Island.
Lehigh is off for finals this week and will return to action on Wednesday, December 15 when the Mountain Hawks play host to Eastern from Stabler Arena. Game time is set for 7:00.
