Providence, RI – Three Mountain Hawks scored in double figures as Lehigh built an 18-point second half lead, and then hung on for a dramatic 77-74 victory over Bowling Green in the opening round of the Brown Classic on Saturday afternoon.  The win improves Lehigh’s record to 4-1 on the season, while the setback drops the Falcons to 2-3 in 2004.

The two teams battled back-and-forth in the first half, as there were five lead changes.  Lehigh sank 15-of-30 shots in the first stanza to take a slim 35-31 advantage into the locker room.  Jessica DePalo scored 13 and Mary Hynoski added eight in the first half to pace Lehigh.

In the second half, Lehigh began to run away with the contest, sinking nine of its first 13 shots from the floor.  Junior Jenny Callan sank a jumper with 7:35 remaining to give the Mountain Hawks their biggest lead of the afternoon at 65-47.  However, the Falcons began to chip away at the lead, and some clutch shooting helped them do just that.

Carin Horne nailed a three-point bomb for the Falcons to cut the Lehigh lead to one at 73-72 with 52 seconds to play.  Lehigh maintained its one-point lead, and put the game away with two Chantal St. Laurent free throws with just eight seconds remaining.

“That was a good team we played today, probably the best we’ve played so far,” said Lehigh head coach Sue Troyan after the win.  “I’m proud of the way we persevered down the stretch, and held on.  This is a big win for us.”

DePalo scored a game-high 24 points, moving her into tenth place on Lehigh’s all-time scoring list (1,029 career points).  Hynoski added 16 points – a career high – and ten rebounds for her second straight double-double in the win.  Adrienne Blount added 11 for Lehigh.  As a team, the Mountain Hawks shot 53% from the floor, scoring 48 points in the paint.

Carin Horne led BGSU’s efforts with 20 points on the afternoon.

With the win, Lehigh will participate in the championship of the Brown Classic on Sunday.  Lehigh will take on the host Bears at 3:00, following the BGSU-Winthrop consolation game, which gets underway at 1:00.  Radio coverage on WLVR-FM (91.3) and lehighsports.com kicks off at 2:45 pm on Sunday.
