Stony Brook, NY – Despite a fast start that included an 11-0 run to begin the game, Lehigh’s struggles on the road continued as the Mountain Hawks suffered a 56-49 loss to Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon. The loss evened Lehigh’s record at 3-3 on the season with all three victories coming at Stabler Arena. Stony Brook improved to 3-2 on the season, with all three of its victories coming at home..

Sophomore Jose Olivero led Lehigh with 23 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field. He was joined in double figure scoring by backcourt mate Joe Knight who tallied 11 points. The Seawolves were paced by Mitchell Beauford who scored 16 points and Cori Spencer, who scored 14 points all in the first half. Niether team shot well as the Mountain Hawks shot 29.8% for the game and an amazing 6% in the second half. Lehigh connected on only two of 30 field goal attempts in the second half. Stony Brook after a rough start managed to shoot 35.8% for the game.

Still, Lehigh did have a chance to claim victory. After trailing by as many as eight points with three minutes left the Mountain Hawks rallied. Olivero hit a three-pointer with 1:51 remaining to pull Lehigh within 46-45, but on the ensuing possession Bobby Santiaqo connected on a drive to the hoop, was fouled and made the ensuing foul shot to again increase the Stony Brook lead to four. Lehigh could get no closer than three points the rest of the way.

Lehigh held Stony Brook without a field goal for the first seven minutes of the contest and Olivero scored nine of the Mountain Hawks first 11 points as the Brown and White opened up that 11-0 lead to begin the game.  The Virginia native finished the half with 17 points on an array of pull-up jumpers, driving layups and quick hit plays and he also had a nice pass between defenders to junior center Mike Fischman for a slam dunk on a fast break.  Junior Joe Knight hit three of his five shots from the field en route to six points in the half, while sophomore center Jason Mgebroff cleaned the glass nicely, pulling down seven rebounds.  The Mountain Hawks hit 54 percent of their shots in the first twenty minutes; however no team hit a three-pointer in the half.

Stony Brook was led by Cori Spencer who hit for 14 first half points, including four of four from the free throw line and five of six from the field.  The Seawolves connected on 41 percent of their shots for the half and 80 percent from the charity stripe.  Mike Popoko led Stony Brook with five rebounds, three of them on the offensive end in the opening half.

Lehigh returns to action on Monday evening when the Mountain Hawks play host to Ivy League foe Columbia.  Game time is set for 7:00 from Stabler Arena, where Lehigh is 27-3 all-time under head coach Billy Taylor and have won a school record 16 consecutive games.
