Six Lehigh wrestlers will return to the mat for the first time in nearly a month as the sixth ranked Mountain Hawks will send a contingent to the 42nd Midlands Championships, taking place Wednesday and Thursday in Evanston, Illinois.

Senior Jon Trenge enters the event as the probable top seed in the 197 pound weight class. Trenge enters the competition looking to become the 17th member of the illustrious “20 in 4” Club – wrestlers who have won 20 Midlands matches in their first four years. The 2002 Midlands champion, Trenge currently has 16 wins in Midlands competition. He is currently 7-1 on the season and is ranked third nationally.

Other Mountain Hawk grapplers scheduled to compete include Andrew Rizzi at 125 pounds, Matt Ciasulli at 133, Brian LaMay at 165, Dave Helfrich at 184 and Paul Weibel in the heavyweight division. Ciasulli and Weibel have both experienced tournament success this year. Ciasulli bounced back from a loss at the Lehigh Wrestle-offs to claim first place at the Penn State Open in early December. In November Weibel finished first in his weight class at the East Stroudsburg Open. Rizzi, LaMay and Helfrich have all seen action in dual meet competition this year, posting a combined 5-4 record.

Competition gets underway Wednesday morning from the Welsh-Ryan Arena on the campus of Northwestern University. Championship round bouts are scheduled for Thursday evening. Wrestlers from over 60 schools will be on hand to take part. Last year the University of Illinois captured the team championship. Lehigh is off to a 7-1 start in dual meet competition and will return to dual action on Friday, January 7 against Penn State.
