Stakes are high for the 140th meeting, set for Saturday

11/17/2004 12:00:00 AM | Football

No. 8 Lehigh wraps up the 2004 regular season on Saturday as the Mountain Hawks head to Easton to tangle with archrival Lafayette in the 140th meeting of college football’s most-played rivalry.  Last week, the Mountain Hawks clinched at least a share of their seventh league title with a 21-14 victory over Fordham.  A Lehigh win on Saturday claims the title outright.  Lafayette, meanwhile, intends to keep its postseason hopes alive.  The Leopards can tie Lehigh for a share of the league crown with a victory.  The winner of this contest not only gets bragging rights for a year, but will also receive the Patriot League’s automatic berth in the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs.

No two teams in all of college football have met more times than Lehigh and Lafayette.  The two rivals have squared off 139 times previously, dating back to 1884.  The Leopards lead the all-time series between these two schools, 72-62-5, but Lehigh has captured 8 of the 9 meetings since 1995.  In Easton, Lafayette leads the series 38-22-5.

Saturday’s game kicks off at just after 12:30 from Fisher Field in Easton.  Tickets for the game are sold out.  The showdown will be televised live on WFMZ-TV in the Lehigh Valley and surrounding areas, and nationally on FSN Pittsburgh (DirecTV channel 627 – note the change, and DISH Network channel 448).  Audio coverage can be found on ESPN Radio 1230 and 1320, as well as lehighsports.com, beginning at 11:30 am.
