Patriot League clash at Goodman features top 20 powers

10/27/2004 12:00:00 AM | Football

The winner of the Lehigh-Colgate game has gone on to at least share in the Patriot League title in each of the last seven years.  These two teams have won more league games and league titles than anyone else.  It should come as no surprise, then, that Saturday’s showdown is the Patriot League Game of the Year, again!

The Mountain Hawks, ranked No. 12 nationally, are 2-0 in league play after trouncing Bucknell 40-17 at Goodman last week.  Meanwhile, the defending league champion Raiders rolled in a 41-7 win over Holy Cross last week in Hamilton to move to 2-0 as well.  Colgate is 18th in the latest Sports Network poll.

Last time they met, Lehigh came up on the short end of a 17-10 score against Colgate at Andy Kerr Stadium.  The Lehigh defense was up for the challenge of stopping Colgate’s high powered offense, which came into the game averaging almost 36 points per game.  But, the Mountain Hawks offense could not put points on the board in the seven-point setback.

Colgate leads the all-time series between these two schools, 24-16-2.  The two teams have split the last six meetings.  The series began in 1922, with Colgate picking up a 35-6 win over Lehigh in Binghamton, NY.  At Goodman Stadium, the Mountain Hawks have captured five of the previous eight meetings.

Saturday’s game kicks off at just after 1:00 from Goodman Stadium.  Saturday is also Family Day.  Tickets for Lehigh-Colgate may be purchased by calling (610) 7LU-GAME, or on-line anytime at lehighsports.com.
