A long way from Lehigh

The Lehigh field hockey team hosts rival Lafayette on Wednesday in a pivotal game.  A victory by the Mountain Hawks will propel Lehigh into the Patriot League’s postseason tournament for the first time since 1996.  A key component of Lehigh’s late-season surge has been the play of senior forward Kristi Miller.  Although a long way from the Ulrich Sports Complex in Bethlehem, just six months ago Miller was in France, taking part in a life far different than what she had grown accustomed to in her first five semesters at Lehigh.  It turned out to be one of the best experiences of her life.

Miller, a marketing and French major, spent the 2004 spring semester studying abroad in the city of Aix, in the northern part of France.  Her classes were taught entirely in French, which was not that hard for her since her mother first began teaching Kristi French when she was four years old.

“It was great practice, having to use the language all the time,” says Miller.

On top of her academic endeavors, miller was an intern for the Mayor of Aix, working extensively with the Mayor’s assistant, Mon. Zazoun.  She spent her time there observing town meetings and working with influential city officials.  One of her favorite jobs was being part of the planning and management of Carnival Aix.

“It’s similar to our St. Patrick’s Day parade,” Miller observed.

Carnival Aix is an outdoor festival that lasts for five days with lots of music and celebrations.  Kristi’s main responsibility was being in charge of the music and bands and making sure they were staying in the right places at the right times.

In case Kristi’s schedule was not filled already, she spent the weekends fulfilling one of her greatest loves: traveling.  Over the course of her stay in France, she was able to visit Belgium, the Czech Republic, England, Germany, Italy, Spain and Switzerland.

Overall, Kristi had an incredible time in Europe.

“It was neat to see the city from a different perspective than a tourist does,” she says.

The experience is one that she will never forget.

When she came back to Lehigh this fall, Kristi did not slow down.  Along with field hockey, she is a Peer Mentor for incoming freshmen and also is a Rho Chi, helping freshmen find sororities that best suit them.  Her field hockey coach, Julie Mazer, was quite impressed with Kristi’s readjustment to being back at Lehigh.

“Kristi was abroad last spring and had her work cut out for her when she came back from France… She showed a great deal of character when she returned as a senior this year…. I don’t think there are many student-athletes who could miss the entire spring season and come back to the team and not only earn a starting position, but be as productive as Kristi has been us.  She has demonstrated an excellent work ethic and I am very proud of her,” says Mazer.

After graduation, Kristi wants to pursue a job with an international business firm.  If her past accomplishments and work ethic are any indication, Kristi Miller is well on her way to attaining any goals she puts in front of herself.
