Bethlehem, PA – No. 3 Lehigh (17-3, 8-0 EIWA) extended its single season record win streak 13, defeating No. 16 Pennsylvania (7-3, 3-2 EIWA) on Sunday afternoon 24-18. The win streak is Lehigh’s longest since winning 16 in a row during the 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons.
The Mountain Hawks struggled early, dropping three of the duals first four bouts. Freshman Cory Cooperman followed a loss by junior Mario Stuart at 125 with a 6-2 decision over Matt Eveleth at 133 to tie the match 3-3. The next two matches both went to the Quakers, as senior Tristan Boyd lost by decision and sophomore Aaron Kling was pinned.
Lehigh rallied back, taking the next five bouts. At 157, when freshman Derek Zinck pinned Aaron Bethea at 1:53 and at 165 freshman Troy Letters picked up a technical fall over Richard Ferguson at 6:07 to give the Mountain Hawks a 14-12 advantage. Junior Brad Dillon increased the lead for Lehigh after picking up a 10-5 decision at 174 over Matt Herrington. The lead was extended for Lehigh by freshman Travis Frick after a 3-1 decision over Ethan Bullock at 184. Jon Trenge followed at 197 with a major decision, defeating Paul Velekei 12-2. The final match at heavyweight went to the Quakers, as No. 6 Matt Feast pinned junior Joe Sahl at the 4:43 mark.
"Our guys wrestled very well today," head coach Greg Strobel said. "Both teams came out fired up and Penn did a really good job, but we managed to pick up the tough win."
The Lehigh - Penn match will be rebroadcast on Fox Sports Net Pittsburgh on Monday at 1:00.
The Mountain Hawks take the mats again on March 7-8, when they travel to Cornell for the EIWA Championships.
