Bethlehem, PA – No. 4 Lehigh (16-3, 7-0 EIWA) defeated Army (9-5, 2-2 EIWA) by a final of 31-6. Lehigh won 8 of 10 of their matches against Army.
The dual at 157 would be the first of four consecutive major decisions for Lehigh. The No. 1 and No. 3 ranked wrestlers in the EIWA began the match. Freshman Derek Zinck got Lehigh off to a 4-0 lead after a major decision over senior Jeremy Conner. Senior Ted Dufresne extended the lead 8-0 after an 11-3 major decision over senior Ron Schroeder at 165. Junior Brad Dillon and freshman Travis Frick won 14-5 and 10-2 respectively at 174 and 184. Dillon defeated freshman Luke Calvert while Frick was victorious over junior Matt Bernard. This gave Lehigh a 16-0 lead going into the match between Jon Trenge and Joe Forsman at 197. Trenge had a technical fall at 4:57 with a score of 17-2. The winning streak would come to an end at heavyweight between No. 2 Joe Sahl and No. 3 John Paxton. The match went into sudden death after a 4-4 tie at the end of the third period. Paxton picked up two quick points with a take down to win 6-4. Junior Mario Stuart and freshman Cory Cooperman won the next two matches at 125 and 133 respectively. Stuart won a 16-4 major decision over freshman Jon Anderson while Cory Cooperman wrestled an 8-2 decision over junior Bernard Gardner. Phillip Simpson, the EIWA’s top ranked 141 lb. wrestler, defeated Tristan Boyd 7-4 in hard fought win. Sophomore Aaron Kling sealed the win for Lehigh at 149 against Anthony Dunkin, with a 10-3 decision.
"I am really proud of the guys," head coach Greg Strobel said. "We really wrestled hard and finished some things with all the bonus wins. Teddy Dufresne did really well to get a major decision wrestling a weight class up."
The Mountain Hawks take on Pennsylvania at home next Sunday at 2 p.m. The match will be televised live on Service Electric Cable TV-2 and Fox Sports Net Pittsburgh will rebroadcast the event. Viewers with access to DirecTV can find the dual on channel 628. The dual can also be heard live on both the Lehigh website at www.lehigh.edu and on 1230 AM.
