Lehigh tops Cornell in top ten clash

Bethlehem, PA – No. 5 Lehigh (15-3, 6-0 EIWA) defeated No. 6 Cornell (10-5, 3-1 EIWA) by a final of 27-10. It was the Mountain Hawks' second win in as many days and 11th in row.
      The dual began at 133, as freshman Cory Cooperman squared off against junior Alejandro Alvarez of Cornell. Cooperman won by fall at the 2:05 mark to give Lehigh a 6-0 lead. The next match was between seniors Tristan Boyd and Byron Warner at 141, with Warner victorious in a 5-4 decision and the lead was cut in half. At 149 was sophomore Tommy Rohn and freshman Dustin Manotti. Manotti dominated most of the match for the first and second period before Rohn made a comeback bid. Rohn would cut Manotti’s lead to 14-8 before falling in a 17-8 major decision.
      Freshman Derek Zinck, at 157, electrified the crowd with a 5-3 decision over senior Gabe Webster, to give Lehigh the lead for good. At 165, freshman Troy Letters defeated junior Scott Roth of Cornell. Letters ran up an 8-1 lead over Roth and rolled to a 16-3 major decision win. The match was very tight between freshman Travis Frick and senior Clint Wattenburg at 184 with neither wrestler scoring in the first round. Wattenburg would cut into the Mountain Hawks lead as he defeated Frick 4-0. Junior Jon Trenge controlled senior Matt Greenberg throughout the match for a 6-1 decision. Junior heavyweight Joe Sahl dominated his match against sophomore Matt Bogumil, with a 17-6 major decision to give Lehigh a 23-10 lead going into the final match. At 125, was freshman Mario Stuart and sophomore Doug Jesse. Stuart won in a major decision over Jesse by a final of 16-5.
      "Cooperman and Rohn really set the tone for the day," head coachc Greg Strobel said. "Cooperman came out and fought until he found the right combination to pick up the fall. And Tommy, even though he didn't win, really fired our guys up with the way he battled after being down early."
      The Mountain Hawks return to action next Saturday when they host Army at 3 p.m. The match can be heard live on the Lehigh website at www.lehigh.edu and on 1230 AM, the Sports Monster. The EIWA matchup will also be televised live on Service Electric Cable TV-2.
